What We’re doing for Advent this year..

Last year’s Advent Calendar

Hey friend!

This year I really thought about what we wanted to give our heart and attention to this advent season – what traditions we were focusing on. I want to make sure that they are helping my family grow closer to each other and to God. This year, we aren’t planning a million things and instagram worthy crafts and shopping all month. In years past, I’ve done just that, and honestly it leaves me feeling drained and guilty come January. There’s not a lot of time for real connection, rest, and waiting when you’re doing all the things, all the time.

After all, Advent is a time for waiting. So I plan to do just that. Have a simple advent season with my family awaiting the arrival of Christmas to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. YOU get to choose friends. You are the gatekeeper of your home. This is your permission, if needed, to do the same!

My number one tip for keeping it simple is having an advent calendar. Seems simple enough, right? Whether it’s homemade like last year’s (seen above) or bought like this years. It keeps everything in one place and the kids get so excited to gather around and read the card for the day and see what activity we are going to do. You can make it as simple as you want. A found branch and some hole punched advent cards tied with yarn. Or write down verses on paper and place them in a bowl to read each day. Don’t over complicate it. Reading the scripture to your kids each day is the main goal.

In our advent calendar, we tuck a card in each pocket and pull it out to read each day. Im using the Christy Beasley Printables from her ‘Nativity Creative Unit Study’ from last year. This is a subscription service BUT you get access to any old content. She has printable art, scripture cards, homeschool unit studies, oily goodies, and so much more. It’s worth its weight in gold and we use her stuff around our home and in our homeschool often! I simply printed the cards out, put one in each “day” pocket on the advent calendar and BOOM. Done!

My kids know to wait until everyone is awake to go to the calendar. We plan to sit around the fire, light a candle and read the scripture on the card. Sometimes this leads to discussion and questions and sometimes its just reading. Go with the flow and don’t force it either way. If your kids are anything like mine, super pointed questions make them feel pressured and shut down any real and beautiful conversation. We will then pray over our day, for others, and about what we just read.

After we read the scripture, on the back of each card, I write an activity for the day. This can be something fun and festive or a service act or craft. We try to keep them simple and write them only a couple days ahead of time, as we go. We aren’t big planners, so I like to kind of see how the week is going before I get myself in to a big festive project I may not feel up to.

At the beginning of December we also read ‘The Giving Manger’ which focuses on acts of service, loving your family, and the real reason for the season! We put this somewhere neutral for the kids to see and they love putting straw in baby Jesus’s manger after doing an act of service or kindness for their family. It never fails, that by the end of the season, they’ve forgotten about collecting the straw and are still just doing the acts for the simple pleasure of loving their family well.

Here’s a list of some activities in case you’re looking for inspiration. remember, it doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful. In fact, I’ve found the more simple you keep it, the more meaningful it is. I hope this served as inspiration for you and was helpful in some way. I’m also currently working on posts about what our homeschool looks like during the Christmas season and another post featuring all of our favorite Christmas books!

Gift Guide // Big Girls

Hello! I know in “blogger world” this gift guide would be considered late. However, that’s just how I roll. This guide is perfect for girls ages say six to ten. I have several of these things already ordered for the girls and included some of our favorites from years past. Enjoy!

gif guide for big girls

guitar // knit slippers kit // record player // BB gun // slippers // fun vintage record // friendship bracelet maker // illustory // polaroid

This guitar is so cool. It is made of real wood and your purchase includes access to their free app that has everything your kiddo needs to play songs: video lessons, a tuner, and a digital songbook.

The girls are both getting this knit slipper kit. It will be the perfect little handicraft to keep their hands occupied during read aloud time. Could we sound any more homeschooled? I love it!

record player is an investment….BUT we use ours everyday and it has just been another very important transitional part of our new family routine. It requires intention and forces you to slow down for a second to select a record, put it on, and flip it over when the times comes. Nostalgia forever, man.

We get a lot of our vintage records at local antique stores, but here is a great place online. Try searching for their favorite artist or looking for read-aloud vinyls, all three of my children love those. The girls would lovethis Tchaikovsky vinyl.

A BB gun is a classic kids gift any kid would be pumped to get. It’s a great opportunity to teach them gun safety and how to act around firearms. Don’t forget the safety goggles!

This illustory is SO cool and a really unique gift! They create their own story, draw pictures to go along with it, and then you send it in and they turn it in to a REAL BOOK.

We got our girls these cameras a couple years back and the pictures that come from them are always amazing. It’s so fun to see their creative eye and also preserve memories from their perspective at the same time. Highly recommend.

Another fun idea is this game. The girls learned to play chess solely playing against each other and now Sophie can beat Josh on occasion.

Some book series Ellie loves are Brambly Hedge and  Amelia Bedelia. She’s in first grade. Sophie loved the Boxcar Children series, we found a huge set of them at Costco a while back, so check there. We also absolutely adore the Little House Series, and in my opinion, its one every household needs!

For collection and pretty bookshelf purposes, these books are gorgeous and classic literature!

Here are some more ideas and I’ll add to it as I think of anything else!

Christmas Home // traditional + cozy finds

Long time, no post. I cannot believe we’re gearing up for the holiday season already! If possible, the years seem to fly by faster and faster. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here before we know it. We are trying to focus on the important things this season, but you know me, I love to decorate my home and make it a cozy place to land between all the hustle and bustle of the season.

I thought it would be fun to round up some pretty Christmas home decor finds. Have fun window shopping or click the links below to shop if something catches your eye! I’m also hoping I can find time to do a gift guide or two. So, if you want to see something specific, head to Instagram and let me know in stories!

ONE // This garland is so realistic and adds beautiful natural touch to your home – without the mess. In the past, I’ve only used real greenery, but it dries out super fast and isn’t exactly cheap. So now I just make sure to buy the most realistic garlands I can find. THIS ONE is another great option.

TWO // We have these cozy boulce pillows in a couple colors throughout the house. They add a nice layer of texture and warmth and be used all year round.

THREE // This throw is gorgeous. I love the colors and it’s a nice weight for California winters.

FOUR // These candles are battery operated and remote controlled. Perfect for those who don’t burn candles in their home but still want the ambiance a candle creates.

FIVE // This wreath is gorgeous and super realistic!

SIX // Love the whimsical shape of this Christmas tree. It’s very realistic and is on SUPER SALE right now.

SEVEN // This rug is a nice layer of warmth to add to a more traditional living space. It would even look pretty in a dining room and I think would hide spills well from little eaters.

EIGHT // If you’re looking for touch of whimsy, then check out this gingerbread doormat. you’ve probably seen it all over Instagram, and for good reason, it’s adorable!

NINE // Tree skirts are out and tree collars are in. I love the natural tone of this one.

TEN // Santa mugs are so fun and the kids love drinking out of them all season long! Water, cocoa, juice; you name it!

ELEVEN // We have some of these gorgeous printed stockings for our mantle. They’re printed from real vintage rugs and are a unique find!

Some other things I’m loving are: this velvet ribbon // these French horns // this bell garland is PERECT for adding to garland for a touch of magic // and this wood bead garland for trimming you tree.

Hope you enjoyed this post! Thank you for reading!

toddler boy gift guide

I know you may have already started Christmas shopping, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll be shopping all the way up to Christmas. So I figured, why not share the things we already have for Jude or am planning on getting him for Christmas this year. So here we go…You can click on each picture and it will take you right to the product or you can read a super unnecessary description of each item below that.

beanie // We love these Carhartt beanies for Jude. Josh + I wear them too. Best fit + not too hot but still warm enough!

garbage truck // I’m so excited for Jude to open this one. He is obsessed with the garbage truck. Seriously, what is it with boys + the garbage truck? This one dumps the trash in with just a lever + then you can dump it out the back – plus it makes noise. He will LOVE it.

super hero doll // Jude usually plays rough with all the girls’ Barbies + they are not here for it. So, we figured it was time to get him his own Barbie sized dolls. He is going to love this Batman!

tree house // The girls each have their own dollhouse and Jude loves to play with his animals in his own treehouse. This is a little pricier, but its beautiful and he loves it, so it was worth the price!

brother mouse // We got one of these for all three kids! Jude always wants to play with his sisters’ mice, so now he will have his own! Plus, the girls didn’t have a “brother mouse” yet. So , they’re all going to love this + it comes in its’ own little carrying case.

wooden grill // We decided not to get this, but I really want someone else to get it! How adorable is that? Great for their fine motor skills too!

fart gun // Yes, I spent $30 on a toy that makes fart noises + it might be the thing I am most excited for him to open. Fart noises are hilarious over here + I can guarantee my kids will fight over this toy.

cash register // This one is aesthetically pleasing + the kids love using it to play store. Win-win!

toy story pajamas // These are self explanatory. I don’t know a little boy who doesn’t love Toy Story!

shopping cart // All of my kids love to play kitchen + store. So this is really a toy for all of them. Plus it’s beautiful + I won’t mind having it out in my living room when the toys inevitably migrate from their playroom.

toy story dolls // Jude is going to lose his mind when he opens these!

helmet // This is technically an adult helmet, but homie has a huge dome, so…. if your child has a normal sized melon you may want to keep looking.

bike // Both of our girls learned to ride bikes by starting with a balance bike. So much easier! This color is sold out, but they have others available.

magna tiles // These are pricey but worth every penny. All three of my kids play with these + I love that they are an open ended toy. They end up using their imagination so much while playing with them.

vans // We love Vans shoes for Jude. He especially love the Velcro pairs because he can do it himself. Love them in this color.

That’s it for now. Hoping to get a girl’s guide up soon, but we shall see! Hope that was helpful for you! Happy Shopping!

fall favorites // festive pajamas

Fall is my favorite. I know, basic right? Whatever. I am who I am. The weather starts to change (for California that means it’s not instantly sweating dripping outside), the air starts to clean up it’s act a little bit, and it’s socially acceptable to watch Hocus Pocus. Sign. Me. Up.

I love to start each holiday season with a little festive “basket” for my kiddos. I’ve shared about them a million times on my Instagram, so I won’t bore you there. One thing I ALWAYS include in the baskets is pajamas. They almost always need them anyway and it’s a cozy and festive way to kick off a holiday. Win-win! So here’s a round up of some of my favorites. Some of these they can even wear all year!

one // two // three // four // five // six

Jude has several pair of the tie dye sets and we love them! The girls love these. We went with the skeleton glow-in-the-dark sets since they’re so fun. We all need a little extra fun right now, right? Hope everyone is doing well and hanging in there. 2020 has been one heck of a wild ride.

Back To School Hack // Hair Station

// Hair Station //

A hair station is something new we’re doing this year. Last year, It never failed that someone couldn’t find the right hair tie for their hair. The brush was always missing and I’d have to leave the kitchen or a crying baby to help. Part of refining the morning routine is finding areas that need help and addressing them in a way that works for your family!

In search of a solution, I started where I always start, Pinterest. I came up with a system that I think will work for us. When we’re not using it, we will store it in the “command center” of our kitchen. You know, that cabinet where all your random medicine and vitamins and some paperwork it only makes sense to store in the kitchen? Only us?

To contain everything I used a silverware caddy we normally use for birthday parties. Please don’t feel like you have to go out and buy a bunch of stuff! Back to school season is expensive enough. Even if you just put some hair items in a drawer in an area that makes sense for your routine, it’ll make a big difference! So here’s what we included:

  • Mister for water to wet the girl’s hair and tame their curls after sleeping on them all night. I am still looking for clean hairspray, help a girl out if you know of any! We don’t use any actual product (beyond shampoo and conditioner) on their hair because it usually just ends up irritating their skin.
  • Best Brush Ever! Seriously. It get our tangles without complaining which is pretty dang rare. We all have similar texture, so the one type works for us.
  • Hair ties of various sizes, our favorite brand is Scuncci. You can get them pretty much anywhere. We also add clear elastics for “fancy” hairstyles and braids.
  • Hair Clips. For bows Eloise likes the sparkly bows from Ryan and Wren and bows from Indy & Pippa. Sophie likes Jojo Bows…. You win some…you lose some.
  • Lotion and chapstick. This chapstick is the best. This lotion has five ingredients and you can pronounce them all! DONE!
  • I also threw in nail clippers. Once you use clippers with a light, you’ll never go back. Genius.

I realize this is nothing ground breaking! But simplifying your routine in easy ways like this and MAINTAINING it, makes a huge difference in the morning!

I hope this helps and make sure to check back soon for our next back to school post! Thanks for reading!

Back To School Hack // Before + After School Chore Charts

The first day of school is quickly approaching for us. No amount of denial is changing that. With that said, I figured I better get my butt in gear getting the house and everyone in it ready. I turned to Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration on ways to improve our routine. I don’t know about you, but Instagram is absolutely full to bursting with back to school inspiration on every level – basic school supplies, festive fun, picture props and letterboards, morning hustle hacks, etc…and I. Am. Obsessed! This year will be our fourth year of school, so I thought it would be fun to share a post a day for a week detailing out what’s worked for us and what we’re adding to make the back to school transition as smooth as possible! First up….

// Before School + After School Checklist //

We recently shared our summer checklist and how it’s working for us. I knew immediately it was something I wanted to add in to our daily school year routine as well. A checklist is easy to make, but has a huge impact! It gives my girls enough independence to get ready for the day and do what they need to do when they get home from school without me nagging them. Eloise (4) still needs a LOT of help because of her age, but we’re working on it! Having the list, gives everybody a goal. I usually end up working through the list with Ellie, whereas Sophie (7), does it on her own. I make the lists myself and laminate them so the girls can use a dry erase marker to cross things off as they go. If you don’t want to make your own, check Pinterest and Etsy. They even have some with pictures for kids who can’t read independently yet!

Once they complete their list in the morning, they can watch tv. To be honest, it’s their only goal in the morning. They’ve figured out by now that they’ll be in school all day, so they want to veg for as long as possible before then. Ideally, I’d prefer they read or colored before school, but a little tv never hurt nobody.

This is just what works for our family. I suggest sitting down and thinking of what your kids need to do before school. Not just the basics as in getting dressed and eating breakfast, but also what healthy habits you expect from them. For instance making their beds or putting their laundry away. Remember to keep their ages in mind so it’s achievable, though! The point is to help the morning and after school run more smoothly, not overwhelm everyone with a bunch of chores! After school they also need time to decompress, so keep it simple but effective!

For us, a checklist helps everything run more smoothly and even when they’re young, gets them in to a routine early on. We’re only human, and sometimes everyone wakes up in a funk and the list goes out the window. Sometimes there are days my kids skip a step or three. Or, after I get back from drop off I’ll find laundry shoved under a bed. Remember their age + give them grace.

Another tip is to get started back with wake up and bed time schedule as soon as possible. Summer slide is real. I don’t know about your family but my girls are NOT morning people. If you’re in the same boat, try waking them up a little earlier than necessary to give them time to wake up before the morning hustle starts otherwise it’s a recipe for tears and meltdowns. so. many. meltdowns. If you have an early riser you’re trying to get to stay in bed so other’s can sleep in as much as possible, try an “OK to wake clock”, It glows when its an “okay time to be awake”. We used this for Sophie when Eloise was a baby and it worked like a charm!

As always, thanks for reading, and check back tomorrow for more back to school tips!

Sophie’s Seventh Shellebration // Boho Mermaid Birthday Party

Boho Mermaid Birthday Party // This Modern Farmhouse // @thismodernfarmhouse

Sophie has been looking forward to her birthday party since the day school got out! She’s a summer baby, so her parties always include water of some kind, even thought we’ve never had a pool. Usually that means a water slide or an obscene amount of water balloons. This year, it was both. It’s always a full house for parties, which is so fun. Josh and I come from big families and of course Sophie wanted to invite her school friends! We kept it simple and just did some snacks, fruit, and beautiful sugar cookies made by a local baker.

Boho Mermaid Birthday Party // This Modern Farmhouse // @thismodernfarmhouse

We did a craft too to give the kid’s a chance to come inside and rest from the heat and using each other as surfboards down the water slide. Yeah, that happened. (Mental note: maybe skip the water slide next year or be sure to have parents sign waivers before they leave.) We found some unfinished treasure boxes at Michaels and Sophie picked all her favorite paint colors. Which by the way, her favorite color is blue now, which I’m still not used to. It’s been pink and purple everything since she could make the choice herself. So, yeah, I’d say seven is a pretty big deal. We put a drop cloth under the table and let the girls have at it. They painted shells and the boxes and no one cried. Success.

I made Sophie a mermaid crown inspired by some pictures on Pinterest, which she was obsessed with before the party. Buuuut then was too embarrassed to wear during the party. So I guess she’s still the same ‘ol Soph after all. Praise be!

Boho Mermaid Birthday Party // This Modern Farmhouse // @thismodernfarmhouse

Her party also included what is quickly becoming a party staple over here- a balloon garland. The garland itself takes barely any time to make, requires zero skill, and is relatively inexpensive. However, it makes a huge statement. I even have plans for a back to school one, using these. You can check out my Instagram highlights here for a tutorial, if you’re needing a few tips and tricks! I used a macrame curtain as a “boho inspired” fishing net. We also brought in one of our egg chairs (which I’m obsessed with) from outside as a special place for her to open presents. Her and all her friends, sisters, and cousins ended up sitting in it to “help her.”

This summer has been jam packed with activities, which is unlike years past. We are usually a hang out at home kind of a family. So it’s been so fun – but so exhausting. I’m ready for a slow down but NOT ready for the girls to be in school. I love having them home with me. So we are making it a point to cherish what’s left of this summer season. I can’t believe she’s seven…

Summer Chore Chart // Schedule

This summer we are trying something new. Normally, we fly by the seat of our pants for summertime. Everyone is so excited to be out of school and not having to pack a lunch (okay, mostly me), that we say YOLO and and all sense of schedule flies out the window. It has worked for us this far, but with both girl’s in full time school in the upcoming fall, I knew that the time for that was pretty much over. I want summer to be fun, but I also don’t want to die a slow death by the time school rolls back around, ya feel me?

Summer Chore Chart // This Modern Farmhouse
Sources listed at the end of post.

In search of the best of both worlds, I came up with this summer schedule. It gives us enough structure and responsibility to keep everybody grounded. It’s also really attainable. We usually finish the list before 9 AM! The rest of the day can be spent on the go or doing something fun! This is also how they earn screen time. When the list is done, they get screen time if they ask for it. I don’t remind them. They’ve forgotten most days so far. This has been our most “screen free summer” yet. MAGIC!

In the beginning of summer, we gave them a reward as incentive. For each day they complete their chores, they take that day’s clip and put it in a jar. The charts aren’t optional unless we have an appointment or something in the morning. So, at the end of the week we have 14 clips in the jar, and they either get treasure box or we do a fun “smaller” activity. By now, they know that the chore lists just need to be done. On occasion we have some whining but for the most part, it’s been really smooth. Although, if you ask the girls, they’d both tell you, they don’t like the lists. Tough cookie.

Summer Chore Chart // This Modern Farmhouse

My husband and I thought about the things we wanted the girls to accomplish each day. Things that we hope will just become engrained in them as a way to start their day. A foundation to build their own daily routines on someday. We came up with this list. We added a box for prayer and affirmations. I really struggled with this, as I didn’t want prayer to feel like a chore. Ultimately, we just decided it was something that they needed to be reminded to do every day.

Summer Chore Chart // Affirmations for Kids // This Modern Farmhouse

I also made them a prayer and affirmation list. Eloise can’t read yet, as she’s only four. Sophie sometimes reads this aloud for them both. Or I read it for her. During the school year, we do affirmations every day on the way to school. This was something I wanted them to keep up. The ones we do on the way to school change from time to time, if someone is struggling with an issue, etc. But this is our core group of affirmations.

I found these clipboards, used my favorite font so the girls could color in the letters for personalization, and laminated them so they could check everything off with a dry erase marker! Easy peasy! Side note: the laminator was very inexpensive and I’m going to use it for so many things in the future!

So tell me, do you have a summer schedule?
