This Modern Farmhouse // Mudroom Tour

Over three years ago, we started the home building process. Josh and I started drawing floorpans in a little notebook I keep my “to-do lists” in. At the time, we were dreaming of a forever home our family could grow in and praying it would all work out. We weren’t sure if it would ever actually happen, but the pieces just started falling into place. And now, we’re here!! It’s beyond surreal and to say we’re grateful is an understatement! We know we are beyond blessed to be where we are and are so, so thankful that we have been able to build our dream home.

This Modern Farmhouse // Mudroom Tour

If you follow along on Instagram, you have probably answered a poll or watched stories about our build. We have loved sharing our journey and it’s safe to say you guys have liked following along too. Eventually, I plan on writing more about the actual building process and some of our “hacks.” So stay tuned for that! For now, I’m just going to focus on room-by-room reveals, so its not overwhelming for you – or me. So without further ado, the space we have named “The Mudroom.”

This Modern Farmhouse Blog // Mudroom Tour // thismodernfarmhouse.com

This room is right around the corner from the garage and right next to the main guest bathroom (which leads outside and is the main bathroom we use during the day). We wanted a space in the house that served a lot of purpose that you didn’t necessarily see all day. Where we could leave unfinished projects and paperwork out, and not worry about it for a day or two. We wanted mudroom cubbies, a place to house our washer and dryer, tons of storage, and “office” space. We also wanted a table or island for crafts, homework, and a general place to put crap on top of that wasn’t our kitchen island. Know what I’m sayin’? I also wanted a big window so I could see in to the backyard while the kids are playing and let in as much natural light as possible. A tall order for sure, but this space delivers, to say the least!

During the build, this room was our biggest headache and went through the most changes. We ultimately cut the built-in island, partly for budgetary reasons and partly because we decided a table and chairs would be more functional and give more character. We added these floating shelves made from reclaimed wood. I love the warmth and character they add to the space.

This Modern Farmhouse // Mudroom Tour

We also decided to stack our washer and dryer and hide it in a cabinet. Otherwise, we would have had to raise the counter height to accommodate them under counter and it would have had a break in the countertop heights somewhere along the way. I’m ALL about symmetry, so that was a no for me. I also added this sink for hand washing laundry, washing up after craft projects, etc. I’m in love with it! We also left open space under the cabinet for this rolling laundry cart, and let me just tell you, that thing is GENIUS!! If you don’t have one, get one. Thank me later!

The lighting we chose has the “farmhouse feel” we were going for without being FARMHOUSE, ya know? They didn’t get adjusted before this photoshoot and to be honest, it kind of drives me nuts.

This Modern Farmhouse Blog // Mudroom Tour

We also added “gift wrap storage,” AKA super long and short drawers and we’re so glad we did. It houses all of our wrapping paper, bags, tissue paper, tags, etc. For the wall space above the counter, we plan on doing some kind of family calendar or “command center” of sorts, Still undecided on that. we love having the counter space there and will add some kind of organizer for mail and the like down the road.

This Modern Farmhouse Blog // Mudroom Tour

For the cubbies, we didn’t want to add doors, because we didn’t want them getting destroyed by our kids since they will see heavy use. The cubbies are also on the same wall as the door, so they aren’t an immediate eyesore when you walk in the room, so leaving them open worked in our favor. We plan on storing shoes below the bench. I still need to find hooks for backpacks, jackets, etc. I like this sleek black hook or this striped one. Each person has the smaller cubby up top to put their devices, keys, sunglasses, etc. The large cubby up top will eventually house a basket with each person’s name. I’m thinking this basket or this one, for a more modern option. I’m sure this space will evolve as the needs of our kids do, but for now it’s perfect! Somewhere along the way, I had the idea to add outlets to the back of the smaller cubby holes up top, but we didn’t want to keep adding changes (read: spend more money), so we skipped it. If you’re building, DO IT!! It would be a great way to have kids dock their devices for the night to keep them out of their room. (Not relevant to our family yet, but soon enough, I’m sure.

The desk space is big enough for two office chairs (not completely pictured here). We ordered this chair and its the perfect cognac leather! They were inexpensive but you’d never know once you see them in person. We also made sure to have extra outlets under the desk for all the devices with USB ports. An inexpensive “upgrade” that makes the space much more functional, and you don’t have to use an outlet space just to charge a device using a USB port anyway.

Last minute, we also added a plug to the back of a cabinet to the right of the desk space and added a pull out drawer for our printer and shredder. Ingenious, I thought. I’m really glad we did. I wanted the space to be functional but pretty. I am still on the search for a table and chairs for the middle of the room. Maybe even a cool, vintage rug!

The flooring is the same throughout the house and it’s WATERPROOF, but looks like real wood! You can find it here. We searched high and low for what felt like forever for flooring. I think it’s the perfect mix of rustic yet modern, warm but not too warm, and light but not too light. The countertops are leathered Indian Black Granite and they are perfection. We wanted black countertops without all the marbling or fragility of soapstone, which is what you see a lot when people use black countertops. This material is so rad and feels amazing under hand.

So there you have it! Let me know what room you’d like to see next. Be sure to follow us over on Instagram and Subscribe so you don’t miss any of our other room reveals. As always, thanks for following along!!

My Nesting Method for Baby Boy

|This Modern Farmhouse Blog| Nesting Method | Favorite Items for Baby Boy

I thought I’d share a few things I have ready to for baby boy’s arrival. I know it’s super early, but being a household of only girl babies, we are SO excited to have a sweet little guy to shop for. This letter board sums up how I “nest” perfectly. For now, I have these beautiful items, and I’ll stock up on the rest in May! Haha. Because really, all your baby needs is you, and diapers — lots and lots diapers. RIGHT?

We are in the process of try to make our purchases more intentional and only purchasing things we truly love and believe in, instead of buying more of lesser quality items just to have a stockpile “ready to go.” We end up with a lot of waste, and its so counter productive. So, my perfection/procrastinator ways may actually work out in my favor this time around. So here’s what I’m currently loving for baby boy and a few things I have my eye on.

DockATot // Eventually as a parents, even a new one, you have to put your baby down. Sad, I know. With both girls we used a rock-n-play for just that when we needed a second to wash dishes, help you toddle or I don’t know, maybe go to the bathroom. The DockATot is one of those “new” things that wasn’t around when either of my girls were born. I can’t wait to try this out! I have visions of the girls hovering over him when I set him down and accidentally knocking a rock-n-play over, so this is the perfect solution. I can still set him down and the girls can visit and play with him on his level without my having to worry about it. Plus, it’s soft, all natural, and made of 100% cotton. It is also tested for breathability and is OEKO-TEX certified. It’s the perfect micro-climate for babies and I cannot wait to see baby boy snuggled in it like a bug in a rug.

Wooden Rattle // So cute and safe for baby to put in his mouth. An heirloom quality toy if I’ve ever seen one.

Wildbird Ring Sling // Once I officially become a mother of three, I’m sure I’ll be wearing baby boy a LOT if I hope to ever get anything done again.  Having my baby in reach of my kisses , smelling the top of his sweet head, and being hands free to be available for my other kiddos? Yes, please! These slings are where it’s at — beautifully made, and come in the most gorgeous colors. I got this color, but I am also hoping to snag it in this color and love this one as well. I plan on having one in my purse, car, and diaper bag, ya know, just in case.

Sleep Set // I turned to Instagram, to ask for recommendations for small shops people loved for boy’s clothing, seeing as this is uncharted territory for me. This brand got a lot of love and I can see why. I ordered a short sleeve sleep set and can’t wait to stock up on more once their warmer weather collection comes out.

Natursutten Pacifiers // Neither of my girls took to these, but I’m hoping third time’s a charm.  We really try to eliminate toxins where we can and these pacis do just that.

Promptly Journal // I documented so poorly with both girls, Most of the time I was just trying to tread water, and writing everything down at the end of an exhausting day was more than a little daunting. As much as I wanted to remember everything, exhaustion or the impulsive/terrible habit of looking through pictures since each child was born and weeping until the next feeding usually took precedence over journaling the day’s milestones. This time around I’m hoping to make it easy on myself so I have no excuse.  I’m for sure planning on using one of these beautiful journals.

Moses Basket and Stand // We were STRICT with Sophie, our oldest (no surprise there.)  She slept in her crib every night from the day she came home from the hospital. Then Eloise came around and we were so worried about messing up Sophie’s sleep schedule that we kept Elle with us in our room for the first few months. It made on-demand breastfeeding and having to get out of bed with a fresh c-section scar so much easier! We plan on doing that again this time around and are currently looking at this moses basket and stand to put our little love nugget in for his nightly slumber.

I know motherhood is about so much more than a fully stocked nursery and a pretty flat lay, but the anticipation and dreaming and preparing my heart and my home for another sweet baby is the absolute best.

In true professional procrastinator/perfectionist fashion, I will be doing a “New Years” post soon talking about our word for the year and a few intentions we are setting as a family, for each child, our marriage, our faith, and businesses. I hope you enjoyed this post and I’m looking forward to blogging much more this year, so if there’s something you want me to post about or want to see more of things I’m already posting, let me know.  Don’t forget to click here to stay up to date and you won’t miss a single one!

Xx, Whitney

Shared Bedroom Christmas Reveal

Shared Girls Room Reveal || This Modern Farmhouse

As promised, here is a reveal of the girls’ room. They are still LOVING their bunk beds and we still plan to have them share a room in the new house. Partly because — sisters, and partly because we hope it will help them get bored of constantly fighting sooner so we can get some dang peace up in here!! Bedtime is actually the only time they don’t fight, so it works out pretty perfectly.  So, without further ado, here it is. (all sources linked below, contains affiliate links.)

These pennant banners are one of my favorite things in their room. They are from Brim Papery. I hope they will serve my girls as a daily remember of just a few of the wonderful things they are.

THIS RUG. Rugs are always the hardest part of any room, and I usually pick them out last, if at all. I wanted something pretty and shag with a vintage feel. The clouds parted and the angels sang and I found this beaut. I love everything about it. It doesn’t shed like traditional shag rugs and is so soft underfoot. The girls love the mix of beautiful colors. Also, It’s machine-washable. Let me repeat that. IT’S MACHINE-WASHABLE!! We all have sensitive skin and allergies over here, so it’s a giant plus for us! It even fits in to a standard washer. As if it could get any better, it is made with all natural dyes, handmade, eco and contain no VOCs like most carpeting and rugs. If you’re in the market, seriously check Lorena Canals Rugs out. Proceeds support the Sakula project, and provide schooling for children in India, and you get a gorgeous rug! I love purchases that contribute to a cause as well.

I added this tree to the girl’s room last year. When I was little, I always dreamed of having a tree in my bedroom. While I still don’t have one in my own room, I love being able to spread as much magic of the Holy season as possible in to every corner of our home for my girls.

Holiday Gift Guide: For Kids

Hey there,

So I don’t know about you, but I have been really struggling with what to get my girls for Christmas this year. The “it” toys just don’t appeal to me and to be honest I know they get played with for all of 5 minutes and promptly abandoned to the toy box.  The girls are 5 and 3 and I feel like it keeps getting harder every year. Kinda like parenting in general, funny how that works. I still don’t know what to get my own kids, but thought this might help you with yours. These are past Christmas gifts that my girls play with EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. No lie! Hope it helps.

This Modern Farmhouse || Holiday Gift Guide for Kids 2017

one. // two. // three. // four. // five. // six. // seven. // eight. // nine.

one. // This one is a no brainer. If your kids don’t have a play kitchen yet, you are seriously missing out on some quiet time. We don’t have this exact one, but looking back, I would totally get this one because — storage!

two. // I didn’t expect these to be as  big of a hit as it is, but my girls play with them so much. They use them to take food orders, too, so perfect to go along with the kitchen.

three. // We got this camera for Sophie’s last birthday. She loves it. We give her film as rewards for really good behavior or when we’re feeling generous. ha. It’s so fun to see the world as she views it.

four. // We got this play table for Sophie before Eloise was even born. There are tons of cute tutorials on Pinterest on how to make it unique for your space or you can leave it natural too.

five. // Eloise for sure uses this more than Sophie. She’s our little bag lady and fills the cart up with all her puppies and pushes it all around the house. This is a sturdy, well made toy that will for sure last through multiple children.

six. // The girls love their mice. They are very well made and they have races across the floor on them or sit on them to watch tv and sometimes even eat snacks on. Sophie is perfecting her spin move and Eloise is really just working on counting down from 3 to begin the “race.”

seven. // This playhouse is adorable. If you have a child who loves to with dolls, then this is a great bet. So beautifully made.

eight. // Both girls love to draw.  Sophie has started practicing all the things she’s learning in Kindergarten and Elle draws 95% on this, 5% on something else we own. Progress.

nine. // Santa usually brings one of the for each girl in their stocking. It helps with bath time, seriously. If you have kids who whine about every damn bath they have to take, get some.

So I’m curious, what are you getting your kids this year?

Magnolia Hearth and Hand Favorite Picks For the Abode

Hey there, long time no post. Whoops. Let’s jut get right to it, shall we? Unless you are NEVER on social media, you are fully aware that America’s favorite couple has released their home decor line with Target. I picked up a few things this weekend, and I have to say — I’m impressed. The stoneware feels like very nice quality and is dishwasher safe, and the color palette is perfection. I expected the price point to be out of hand, but honestly felt like they did a great job of keeping the prices lower than most Threshold items you normally see at Target. So, I thought I would share some of my favorite picks.

So what did you think of the line? Did you grab anything!! Tell me in the comments!!

Happy Monday, babes!!

Summer Wishlist 2017

Summer for the girls so far has looked like a whole lot like staying in their pajamas until it’s time to get into swimsuits, hunting for rolly pollys, backyard movies, daisy chain making, and crying through every sunscreen application, and making s’mores while Sophie repeated all the steps for us from “the Sandlot.” Teach ’em young guys!. For me, it’s been trying to keep my sanity and enjoy this time while entertaining two wild animals who sunburn in .5 seconds and hate being hot! It’s been wonderful and exhausting all at once. I think that’s pretty much motherhood in a nutshell though, right? Really trying to remember that “the days are long but the years are short.”  As much as I joke, I wouldn’t change this time for anything. Watching the girls’ friendship grow from “just” sisters to actual friends has been the sweetest thing I’ve experienced so far as a mother. Don’t get me wrong, they still fight constantly, but this summer is different. It feels like the beginning for them, you know what I mean? Plus, as their mama, knowing they have each other gives my heart so much peace.

At the beginning of summer, we sat down as a family and made a list of all the fun things we hope to accomplish before school starts back up again.  The girls were finally old enough to add their own ideas and it has been really fun watching them team up to come up with suggestions all their own. They still try to add things daily, but these are the constants.

What do you and your family have planned? Let me know, and we can always make room on the list if there is something we forgot! 😉 Happy Tuesday, babes!

This Modern Farmhouse// Exterior

We still haven’t started the actual building process. So to tide me over, I thought it would be fun to share some of our inspiration. My husband Josh and I both love the Modern Farmhouse look. Originally, we were worried it was too “on trend,” but I think it actually just happens to be that a “classic look” is the current trend. Plus, you kind of have to go with “farmhouse” if you’re going to be living in the middle of an orchard on your family’s farm, right?

We started the drawing process for our plans ourselves since Josh is familiar with Auto Cad. We did that for a few months before we sought out a professional to help us make it more cohesive. In the beginning of the process, we  focused mostly on layout and then focused on exterior a little later. Maybe that’s the wrong way, but it worked for us! As far as inspiration goes, enter this exterior, and cue allllll the drooling. I have had this on my Pinterest board since Pinterest became a “thing.” It’s cut off awkwardly awkwardly and I can’t find the source. But imagine what you see here plus the contrast of black window frames, and it is pure magic though, amiright?

And this?? I mean that’s some serious eye candy.

This is our actual front exterior elevation, which may not be all the exciting to you unless you’re in to home design. For us, it’s almost two years of planning and praying. We are so excited to start our dream home building process and are very excited to share it all with you! Plus, we are both pretty terrible decision makers, so I’m hoping you will fill in the blanks with lots of suggestions and tie breakers! If you aren’t already, head to Instagram to get a peek at what my house actually looks like right now. Hint: nothing like this and currently a disaster!  Have a Happy Thursday, and as always, thanks for stopping by babe!

Graduation, Summer, + Some Thoughts On Motherhood

I am so happy this school year has come to a close. Preschool was our first experience with school of any kind. Sophie loved it! She made friends, she adapted, she grew, she learned so much. However, she was definitely over it the past few weeks. They started “review,” and homegirl just got super bored. Been there, done that, ya know? That and the fact that we were having too much fun on the weekends because she started crying every Monday when I dropped her off for the last month because she wanted to go home. So sad! Her graduation was the most bittersweet day. They played “Pomp and Circumstance” and all the kids wore a gown and cap adorned with their handprint. We are so proud of our girl, and love seeing a little glimpse in to the wonderful person she is and will continue to become.

It seems like time is really slipping through my fingers lately. When Sophie was a newborn, I used to nurse her and cry about the day she would leave for her first day of preschool and she now she’s a graduate! Eloise is talking constantly and her hilarious personality is shining through. The girls are growing so fast and we are all excited to enjoy the free and easy pace summer has to offer; to soak up all of the magic of their childhood. This season of life “in the trenches” can be hard on so many levels. Even though it is fulfilling and wonderful far beyond the hardships, the responsibility of being a parent in today’s sometimes ugly world can be really daunting. I’ve never prayed so much in my whole life as I have since I became a parent. I pray constantly for peace, wisdom, grace,  patience, and anything I’ll need to be the parent my girls need. Parenting these sweet little souls isn’t something I take lightly, and I just want to make their childhood as magical and carefree as I can. Let them know constantly how loved they are, even if they “already know that.”  Not sweat the small stuff. Let them be little. Celebrate every victory, no matter how small. Preschool graduation and the beginning of summer is no exception.

To help celebrate, I threw together a little end of summer basket for each of them. I made sure to throw in summer staples like sidewalk chalk and glow sticks for all the raves we plan on attending. I was really stoked to find these Trace-n-Erase Chalkboards™ chalkboards from Chalkfull of Design. So far, they are a hit and the girls have spent a lot of time using them. Eloise scribbles and says she’s “spelling her name,” and Sophie traces perfectly over the lines. Then Sophie gets bored of doing it the “right way,” and scribbles over the whole thing like her little sister. Rebels, the both of them.  I’m bottling them up. Savoring it all. Because as they say, these are the days.

Happy Monday everyone!

|| Friday 5 ||

Yesssss. We made it. I don’t know about you, but every time our household holds it down for another week by surviving until Friday, we celebrate. Let me tell you something, friend…one of life’s greatest mysteries is this, how do two consecutive days go by so slowly on one end of the week but so quickly on the other end. For instance, Monday and Tuesday are the slowest days ever. (It’s science, trust me.) Saturday and Sunday however, fastest two days ever. None of that has anything to do with my first installment of…drumroll pleasssse, Friday 5. I just know you all feel me on that and solidarity is important, amiright? Moving right along…

  1. This Madewell tee is adorable and super comfy. Perfect for casual days running errands with my little, but still cute enough to feel put together. I also love these slightly upgraded basic tees. Here & here.
  2. Summer will be here before we know it, and this eyelet top will be perfect for playdates and backyard parties. Nothing says summer more than eyelet and denim cutoffs.
  3. It is still a little chilly here in Cali. So a denim jacket some mornings and in the evenings is a must of now. I am loving this distressed version and this embroidered one. I have ALL The hearts eyes for anything embroidered.
  4. My husband says on an ugly scale of 1-10, these are a solid 7.  I love them anyway. Sorry, boo.
  5. Everyone and their moms has their peepers peeped on the “it” clutch of the summer, but I’ve got my heart set on this one (in the neutral color, not the blue one featured.)

By the way, a few of you have asked and my subscription box isn’t working, so I will get it up and running soon. Thanks for your patience.

Have  a lovely weekend babes! Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope to see your beautiful face around here again!
